Anthony Wagers of London beat Lonnie Grubb, also of London, under the checkered flag by just two car lengths to post his third feature victory of the season in the Grease Monkey Auto Care Pure Street Series at Corbin Speedway on Saturday, May 5.
Wagers was battling with Jason West of Williamsburg for the lead when the two made contact in the second turn on the 12th lap. West was sent to the rear of the lineup for the restart, and Wagers led the rest of the way.
The race got off to a bad start when a multi-car tangle at the end of the front straightaway sent the car of Wayne Jones of London crashing into the outside retaining wall. He was later transported to Baptist Regional Medical Center, and reportedly suffered a concussion.
On the red flag stoppage, Jason Jones, also from London, replaced Wayne’s brother, Dale, in the family’s D&J Performance No. 18 Camaro as he wanted to remain with Wayne.
The red flag stop, plus a spate of caution flags caused the race to take nearly an hour to complete.
Wagers, driving his familiar Wagers Auto Parts No. 15 Camaro, also set fast time at 14.775 seconds and won the first trophy dash.
Grubb took second place in the Moses Racing No. 11 Camaro, with Ronnie Romines of Knoxville third driving the McKeehan Auto Body No. 15 Camaro.
West took fourth in the Quality Care Auto Service No. 35 Camaro, with Nathaniel Harrison of Keavy fifth driving the Eubanks Electrical Supply No. 9 Monte Carlo.
Rounding out the finish, in order, were Jason Jones, Kyle Parker with his Burning Rubber Radio No. 0 Camaro, Jesse Parker in the Performance Diesel Tech No. 58 Omega, and Chris Smith at the wheel of the Sawzall No. 7 Camaro.
Wayne Smith was credited with tenth place in the Jones Trucking No. 88 Camaro.
West was the winner of the second trophy dash.
