||CORY HAAS CLAIMS SECOND WIN OF YEAR IN WILD LINCOLN "410" SPRINT WORLD OF OUTLAW TUNE-UP
Lady driver Brie Hershey scores first career "358" sprint car win; Will Walls Claims 1st Thundercar Feature of 2012
...ABBOTTSTOWN, PA - It might have been the double-file restarts. It might have been the "super moon."
Whatever the reason, fans got their money's worth in the 410 sprint car "World of Outlaws Tune-Up" at Lincoln Speedway Saturday night.
Although there were only four official "lead changes," Cory Haas and Danny Dietrich passed each other at least two dozen times in the 30-lap feature. In the end, Haas was standing in victory lane and the Embee & Son/York PB Truss/Barshinger Builder-Developer #11c team took home the $4,000 top prize.
"I hope they (the fans) enjoyed that, because that was a heck-of-a lot of fun.I know that," said Haas in victory lane, "Danny's one hell-of-a racer, and we both kinda got held up there in lapped cars. It wasn't that far from the wall up here (turns three and four), so you had to be careful but you had to run hard. It was piled up and he jumped it once or twice and I jumped it a couple times."
World of Outlaws format qualifying put Dietrich and Haas on the front row for the start. Haas led the first two laps before Dietrich took to the front on a third-lap restart. He led the next 13 laps before Haas reclaimed the lead in turns three and four of lap 16.
"He peeled down one time and I went around him. It was real tight getting off four," said Haas, "I enjoy racing with Danny. He raced me real clean and I try to do the same with him. You can't give him too much room, but you take as much as you can.and I took some from him a couple of times tonight."
Dietrich again grabbed the lead on a 24th-lap restart that followed a red flag for a flipping Fred Rahmer, who landed on the fourth-turn wall after jumping the cushion while battling seventh-starting Brian Montieth for third.
Haas drove under Dietrich exiting turn two of lap 25 to take the lead for good, and drove away to a 1.67 win.
But in between, the drivers swapped the lead numerous times, sometimes in the turns and occasionally on the straightaways in lapped traffic.
"If I'd have gone out late tonight, I don't know that we'd have timed real well," added Haas, looking forward to Wednesday's World of Outlaw show, "That's going to be a big key on Wednesday night. I sort of feel like I can win, and I'm sure Danny, Brian, and Alan all feel the same way. I think we all get around here pretty good, and I'm really looking forward to it."
Points leader Dietrich settled for second, with Montieth third, Alan Krimes fourth, and Logan Schuchart fifth. Completing the top ten were Brent Marks, Sam Hafertepe, Jr., Adam Wilt, Jim Siegel, and Billy Dietrich.
Heats for the 410 Sprints were won by Lance Dewease, Gerard McIntyre, Jr., Montieth, and Krimes. Danny Dietrich won the Dash. Nick Schlauch, Jr. won the B-Main. Fast time in time trials over the 35-car field was set by Logan Schuchart with a one-lap time of 13.508-seconds (99.941 MPH).
Dillsburg's Brie Hershey became the first lady driver to receive a York County Racing Club pewter plate after claiming her first career win in the 20-lap "358" sprint car feature.
Hershey started on the outside of the front row, grabbed the lead from polesitter Mike Duncan, Jr. at the start, and led every lap. Though there was great racing all through the field, no one was able to mount a serious challenge.
Jan Luckenbaugh crossed second, with Doug Hammaker, Tim Wagaman, and Mike Bittinger completing the top five. Sixth through tenth were Niki Young, Nathan Berwager, Ryan Wilson, Tim Berkheimer, and Jeff Rohrbaugh.
Heats for the 29 "358" Sprinters on hand were won by Hershey, Adrian Shaffer, and Luckenbaugh, with Keith Prutzman winning the consolation.
Gettysburg's Will Walls started on the pole, drove into the lead at the drop of the green, and then led every lap to pick up his first win of 2012 in the 20-lap Thundercar feature. Third-starting Danny Beard, outside frontrow starter Brian Diehl jumped onto Wall's bumper on the opening lap and chased him all the way to no avail as Walls recorded his 7th career Lincoln Thundercar win by .66-seconds over Beard.
Diehl, 10th-starting Duane Watson and 12th-starting Kyle Martin completed the top-five
Rounding out the top-10 were Mike Slaybaugh, Jimmy Combs, Jamie Zentmyer, Roy Warehime, Jr. and Jimmy Jesmer.
Heats for the 22 Thundercars were won by Brian Diehl, Danny Beard, and Mike Slaybaugh. This Wednesday, May 9, the World of Outlaws return to Lincoln Speedway to take on the PA Posse. This sprint only show will be the firs appearance by the World of Outlaws since 1998. Pit gates will open at 1 PM, General Admission gates open at 4 PM, and time trials will start at 7 PM.
