ARCA/CRA Super Series Returns to Toledo Speedway Sunday

After a one year hiatus the ARCA/CRA Super Series will return to Toledo Speedway this Sunday for its second event of the 2012 season and second under the new partnership with ARCA. Sunday’s event will be the 13th series event held at Toledo Speedway since the series first raced their on August 4th, 2000 when Harold Fair Jr. got his first and only ARCA/CRA Super Series victory.
There is a three way tie for the most series victories at Toledo Speedway, two of those names top the entry list of 33 teams entered so far for Sunday’s 7 UP 100. Three time series Champion Scott Hantz and two time series Champion Johnny VanDoorn both have two series victories apiece at Toledo and both are entered for Sunday’s event. Retired Canadian Motorsports Hall of Fame driver Junior Hanley is the third driver tied with two victories. VanDoorn set the track’s series qualifying record in 2009 with a 15.473 lap which is an average of 116.603 miles per hour.
Several drivers will make a very long haul to compete in this Sunday’s event including Florida native Steve Dorer, and North Carolina native’s Kenzie Ruston and Becca Kasten, Dorer and Ruston picked up their first CRA victories during the 2011 season. Two Wisconsin drivers are entered, 2011 ASA Midwest Series Champion Andrew Morrissey and Ed Szelagowski Jr.
Other top CRA drivers entered for Saturday’s event includes Rick Turner, Kenny Tweedy, Terry Fisher Jr., Jason Dietsch, Brian Campbell, Damon Ecoff, Jay Niewiek, Eddie Van Meter, Nick Lay, Justin Alsip, and Nick Gullatta. Jeff Lane will make his first series start of the 2012 season in the Tim Bennett owned machine for Bennett’s regular driver Joe Beaver, who sustained a broken wrist in a crash in the series season opener at Anderson Speedway. Lane is the only other driver entered besides Hantz and VanDoorn who has won a series event at Toledo.
The series has a great group of registered Boyne Machine Company Rookie of the Year candidates entered including rookie points leader Nate Caruth, and fellow rookies Johnny Jenkins, Brett Robinson, Travis Braden and Kasten.
Several part-time series drivers will be attempting to make their first series start of the season including Michigan natives Billy Leslie, a past ARCA Racing Series winner at Winchester Speedway and Keith Herp, Alec Carll, and Chad Finley, a regular in the JEGS/CRA All-Stars Tour, who will be making his first ever start with the ARCA/CRA Super Series. Also Ohio natives Jeep Pflum, Kyle Jones and David Carter, Illinois driver Rick Ruckh, Indiana veteran racer Brent Jack and Ontario Canada driver Rick Brown.
There will be an open practice at Toledo Speedway on Saturday. Pits open at 9am, practice will run from 1pm until 5pm. CRA Tech Officials will be on hand Saturday to take series cars through pre-practice tech from 4pm until 6pm, which is required prior to the series scheduled practice on Sunday. Pits open on Sunday at 9am, practice will begin at 11am with qualifying starting at 12:45pm. The race program will begin at 2pm and will include the 7 UP 100 for the ARCA/CRA Super Series plus the 7 UP 100 for the ARCA Gold Cup Outlaw Late Models.
